Tips for Moving

According to statistics from the U.S. Census Bureau, the summer months of June through September are the most popular times of the year for people to move. If you are within the roughly 58% of Americans who plan to make a move during the summer, this season could be bringing additional stress. However, with proper planning and organization, it can also be an exciting new chapter in your life. Here are some tips to make the process smoother.

Declutter before you move

Moving is the perfect opportunity to get rid of items that you no longer need or use. Go through your belongings and donate, sell or dispose of anything that no longer serves a purpose.

Pack early

Start packing as early as possible, ideally a few weeks before your move. Begin with items that you don’t use regularly and work your way towards the things you use daily.

Label everything

Make sure to label each box with the contents and the room it belongs in. This will make unpacking much easier and save you time in the long run.

Hire a reputable moving company

Do your research and choose a reliable moving company that has positive reviews and is licensed and insured. Get a written estimate and read the contract carefully.

Notify important contacts of your new address

Make a list of everyone who needs to be notified of your change of address, including banks, credit card companies, utilities, and the post office. Submit a change of address form with the post office to ensure your mail is forwarded to your new address.

Pack an essentials box

Pack a box with all the essentials you’ll need for the first few days in your new home, such as toiletries, a change of clothes, bedding, and basic kitchen supplies.

Following these tips can make your move less stressful and more organized. Remember to take breaks and ask for help when needed, and enjoy the excitement of starting a new chapter in your life!
